 Digital Storytelling is the practice of using computer-based tools to tell stories. As with traditional storytelling, most digital stories focus on a specific topic and contain a particular point of view. However, as the name implies, digital stories usually contain some mixture of computer-based images, text, recorded audio narration, video clips and/or music.

Create Movies/Animation (some with audio, some without)

  • Stupeflix  Mix images, videos and soundtracks. Add titles, transitions, oohs, and ahhs.
  • Masher - Mix Your videos and photos, with our huge library of video clips from BBC Motion Gallery, Rip Curl and more.
  • Animoto (for educators) (example)  - Upload pictures, add text and mucis - create a cool movie.  Pros: extremely simple to use, embed in sites or share with a link, teacher accounts are free
  • Dvolver -(see example at bottom of page) *Preview first- some of the character choices are risky) Really easy- create an animated movie, includes music, but no voice recording.  Students can email or embed their videos.  Pros: extremely easy to use, just text and animation (no audio) Caution: Some of the cartoon characters are inappropriately dressed.
  • Xtranormal (example)- Text to movie.  Pick your scenes, characters, type your text select the camera angles and body gestures and create your movie.  Text will be spoken in movie.  Pros: text to speech, students type and the computer generates the speech, easy to use, high quality results, embed or share with a link
  • Capzules -(example) Combine your videos, photos, blogs, and mp3s into rich multimedia stories.  Pros: creates a flow to your presentation, great for teacher lessons, step-by-step process
  • My StoryMaker -lets you control characters and objects - and creates sentences for you! Once you are done with your story, you can print it out. You can print it out again by entering your magic number in the box on the right. Unfortunately you cannot go back in and edit a story once you have ended it.
  • Myths and Legends Story Creator -(example) Once you have read and listened to some of our stories, you might like to try your hand at creating your own version of one of the stories or even creating a brand new story. On this site we have a 'Story Creator' which will help you to use pictures to create a graphic version of a story. The 'Story Creator' comes with lots of backgrounds, characters and props and you can even add your own pictures.

  • CardFunk - Create Dancing Video Cards
  • Made Up Memories - Create a fun video starring you!  Share it with family and friends.
  • OurStory - OurStory goes beyond blogging to permanently capture life's stories in words and photos. Publish or share the stories privately with family and friends.

    Photos with Text

    Little Bird Tales is a nice site intended for younger students to use to create digital stories. Little Bird Tales walks users through each step of creating a multimedia story. Users can upload images, draw images, or record from their webcams. Stories can be written with text or narrated by students using microphones connected to their computers.

    Storybird (example) - select a group of artist drawings and write a story to the pictures.  You can share with a link.  Pros: illustrations are provided, can share story and collaborate with others.

  • Tikatok (example) - photos, drawings, documents with text. You can share with a link.  Pros: Story starters with pictures are provided,  links to share online, options to purchase in hard cover
  • MixBook (example) - photos, drawings, documents with text.  You can share with a link.  Pro: Provides great backgrounds and pictures, can share online with a link, just like scrapbooking
  • StoryJumper -Publish your own books.  It does give to option to buy.  Excellent teacher options, create a class list, print out handouts for login information for students.  Students can avoid having to use email addresses!  (NO STUDENT EMAIL NECESSARY)
  • Fuzzwich 
  • Scrapblog  is the best way for you to turn your cherished photos into books, cards, calendars, and slideshows to share with friends & family.
  • BigUniverse is an engaging website. You can read book online or you can create your own and publish it.

  • •FineTuna - Add comments to any image and share.  Great for how to tutorials or if you have an image you want students to explain or describe). (NO Student email necessary)
  • Bookr form PimPamPum – Pulls in photos from FlickR, but allows students to create digital books online.  It’s an easy and amazing digital storytelling tool.  To find the embed code click Blog This.
  • Zooburst -  ZooBurst is a digital storytelling tool that is designed to let anyone easily create their own customized 3D pop-up books. (Examples)
  • Kizoa -Create beautiful slideshows--With music and many effects--Insert them into your blog or website--Burn slideshows to DVD--Edit your pictures easily--Store and organize all your photos online
  •  Photos with Audio

    • PhotoStory 3 -(example at bottom of page) - You need to download the software to your computer.  Create a story with photos and your own recorded audio.  Saves as a WMV. (tutorial sheets)  Pros: downloaded program so you can avoid internet issues, saves as a WMV, easy step-by-step process

    • VoiceThreads (example)- Upload pictures and narrate them.   Pros: collaboration, share with a link.

    • You can post photos along with an audio description. You can even grab images off the web by just using the photo’s url address.
